Domains must be renewed before they expire, or your website and email will stop working. We send renewal reminders via email and SMS starting 30 days before expiry. If a domain expires, there's usually a grace period (varies by extension) where you can still renew it, sometimes with a late fee. After that, it enters a redemption period with a higher recovery cost, and eventually becomes available for anyone to register. To avoid any risk, enable auto-renewal from your Customer Dashboard or renew manually well before the expiry date shown there.
